prettypammie and Quinn had a talk about the stars and gravity, and how the Earth is a big ball that pulls on us to keep us on it. Yes, I agreed, and there are some people who think...and then I went on to explain one of the theories of quantum gravity that in fact it is not the Earth that is pulling us, but rather the entire universe is pushing on us, just a little bit, and the Earth and other objects shadows us from it.
So, yes, I just tried to explain a Unified Field Theory to a five-year old.
The scary thing is, he seemed intrigued--not sure he "got it." I hope he finds it interesting that while many scientists think and teach that matter pulls us, and others think that it's exactly the other way around.
I want to make sure that my son learns that people can disagree with each other without hating those with opposing views.
Current Mood: had been pretty good
Yes, but have you also explained to him that the so-called "light bulbs" are in fact dark-suckers? (They stop working when they get full.)

ooo...you are evil...
yes, we shall have this discussion tonight...
my first chance to truly warp a young mind...
I shall NOT fail!

Clearly you are ignorant...
(tongue in cheek mode on)
...of INTELLIGENT FALLING THEORY. Oh sure, the so called "scientists" have a "theory" about how matter attracts other matter through gravity. But there is also the theory of "Inteligent Falling" which says that God is pulling everthing downward. Can't prove that isn't true! ;)

* snork * I wuv me my Wunion...
I hadn't heard that before. I think you just broke my head. I probably needed it. Thanks!

The Elegant Universe. It does for Unified Field Theories--particularly String Theory--what Gleick did for Chaos Theory in Chaos. Excellent, accessible reading--believe it or not, a page-turner.

B talks to the girls that way, too. I don't think they understand it all much of the time, but both of them surprise me from time to time with what they *did* get out of it.
Me, I just explain that "Math is HARD" and that girls should enjoy make-up and shopping, of course.
What I find difficult about opposing views is that so often they seem to fly in the face of things that I see as fact. Of course, my opinions probably seem the same way to them.

Yes, I'm always amazed at how much Quinn picks up by osmosis.
