DEVASTATING DAMAGE EXPECTED

HURRICANE KATRINA
A MOST POWERFUL HURRICANE WITH UNPRECEDENTED
STRENGTH...RIVALING THE INTENSITY OF HURRICANE CAMILLE OF 1969.

For the rest, hit the NWS directly or this repost http://www.livejournal.com/users/arielblue/396243.html

It's hard to imagine this sort of devastation of a major U.S. city. I certainly hope most people have heeded the warnings and evacuated.

Sadly, the mayor of New Orleans didn't order complete evacuation until after all busses, trains, plains and cars for hire were gone / no longer running.

I have a friend (scyllacat) that's stuck there due to that.

Well, it's built to sustain the winds, even if the ground level floods, and you can stack people in it like cordwood....

Yes, but why there were so many people still in N.O. who were willing to go to a shelter but were somehow still in N.O.

Right--yeah, apparently a lot of people live in the city w/no car--and all the other means of transportation had pulled up stakes.

Now, why you wait for the evacuation ORDER when you could get out early and miss the mass grid-lock exodus....THAT I don't get.

Probably that lack of car or gas money.

Y'know, if I had no car, and/or no gas money and a Huge MoFo of a storm was bearing down on me, I'd be calling the Red Cross or Greyhound or Amtrak, etc., asking if there was any help available to get me on one of those trains or buses. I have to imagine there were empty seats, and even under a voluntary evacuation advisory, there might be financial assistance available for providers that donated seats to get people out of the city...it'd be a lot more cost-effective to do that than be trying to rescue, treat, feed, and house people in place after the disaster hit...

Ouch...that's horrible. It sounds like the transportation providers buttoned up way faster than people were prepared for.

I hope she's only lost power/internet/cell.

Weird. No idea who this person is, and all I know of her is that she'd planned on DragonCon, got stuck in New Orleans outside an official shelter, and had a fight with her store's air conditioning contractor.

But I feel a real and personal fear for her safety.

I did suggest that Scylla call the Red Cross....I don't know if they could help her or not.

Seems to me there is a better way to handle this. Like, a network of churches (churches tend to have vans, and space) to refugee people from one place or another. I don't think the Red Cross is set up for that though.

Also, lots of people don't feel free to leave their jobs UNTIL there's an evacuation order. Some people will fire you for that.

Sadly, I think the Red Cross is getting ready for after storms rather than before them. I think it's horrible that by the time there was an evac order it was nearly impossible to evac without a personal car.

A weird coincidence is that the first poster above had mentioned scyllacat, but I found her journal not through his post but instead via http://www.livejournal.com/users/katrinacane/friends. I only just noticed the matching name.
