The choices were a medium-end Palm (Zire 72), an entry-level iPaq PPC (more an MP3 player than the full-function PDA that I would prefer), books that I'll never read, or the software.

Well, I'll get my own new PDA/Phone one of these days--and the sotfware will be fun to play with.
