Good customer service still exists at Dell..
I described all the problems I've been having, and the detailed steps I've taken to address them, expecting to be told "slick the box and reinstall have a nice day."
Thank you for the very detailed troubleshooting steps. Given the information you have provided I have set up a tech to come out to service the machine with a Motherboard, RAM, Video card and Heat Sink. I feel this will solve the issue with this system.

...they have no way of really knowing what's going on over the phone.
I have over a decade of experience in exactly this sort of thing, and all I can really say for sure is "it's broke."
I'm just glad THEY'RE acknowledging it...

Oh I hope this lasts, since my new Laptop is a Dell and I got the 3 year warranty contract etc when I bought it. It would be wonderful to get the quality service I need if it ever breaks down. Thanks for sharing.

I did that with HP, and they told me that they had to go through all the steps I had already gone through, and *then* sent a tech out to replace my parent's CD burner.
at least the girl I got on the phone was helpful in regards to "I know you've done this already...but I have to have you do it on the phone", she sounded cute, and I had no trouble talking to her while getting tech support, and a little mild flirting with the tech support chick as well ;)
