That fast shutdown you just saw (if you have me on your IM lists)...
was me doing an emergency power down, unplug, battery removal--to deal with the bubble soap Quinn just dumped on my laptop.

Luckily he just hit the back corner where the fans, heatsink, and vents are--and it looks like he missed the fans. Oh dear...update..he missed one of the fans...anyone know if the fans on an Inspiron 8200 ever operate independently?

Didn't think so.

Sigh.

called a heat-sink. basically when the computer turns a 1 to a 0 or a 0 to a 1, the value it was before is gone...but, you know that nature doesn't ever allow anything to just disappear...so, you have heat! (okay, well, this is a poetic description, but hey!) there's also motors in the disk drives and such like...if you kept all that heat in the computer's box, it'd cook.

now I won't go too deeply into thermodynamics here--but one principle you probably know is that heat moves across larger surface areas better than it does across fans...so the heat sink generally has lots of thin metal fins. the fans pull cool outside air over the fins and vent heated air to the outside world.

I must have been out of it when I wrote this "larger areas better than across smaller," not fans.
