Happy Birthday to Quinn
He's three years old and very excited about getting Birthday cupcakes and everyone singing happy birthday at day-care today!

I love that little boy...he's such a joy even on sleepy, grumpy mornings like today. (He felt better after I gave in and gave him half a PBJ sandwich for breakfast...was that wrong?)

grain, fruit (sorta), protein... what is wrong with that? Hell, that is a good breakfast at this house.

what I didn't do...

(Link)
is say "no" and then give in and change my mind...I just told him other things like "You have a Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich in your lunch."

We have a firm policy that "no means no," even if we realize that no was stupid or just blurted out...

We try to avoid no (but that's not easy with a three year old) but once "no" is out there, it's not negotiable.

This seems to have the desired result of a less fussy, less confrontational little boy. (Have I mentioned he says please and thank you and "Youwebcome."?)

Not that I don't ocassionally slip, 'tis true...but I try to make that the infrequent exception.

youwebcom? Has he been using Yahoo? ;-P

Strong no's...maybe you could start a tradition that he gets one No back on his birthday only. Makes the day that much more special, and teaches him responsible decision making. ;-}

Happy Birthday to Quinn!

Don't worry, PB&J isn't as bad as ice cream for breakfast. &;)

Going off on a tangent, you know something funny? My honey calls peanut butter and jelly sandwiches "peanut butter sandwiches" -- imagine my surprise when he offered to me a "peanut butter sandwich" and when I took a bite, there was jelly in it, too! Apparently, he doesn't believe it's possible to eat peanut butter without jelly. Silly.

Um... I've had this icon for almost 3 months now? And yes, the new (and only) kitty, if 2 years or so still counts as new? Mocha is the kitty that we got from your parents, if that's what you were wondering.

Thanks, happypete's parents, for the cute and snuggly (but occasionally bad) kitty!

&:)

You're still a *grrrrreat* dad!

Nutritionally not a horrible choice. I totally understand about the no thing, and Backing down is not a great idea. I have the same policy, so I try to pick my no carefully. Remember you don't have to give an answer right away and think about *why* am I saying no? Whining and temper tantrums *are* a reason to say no and stick to it. I find with three year olds, unless there is a good concrete reason to reject a food choice, it generally isn't worth it. The latest stuff says to try to avoid conflict around food, so unless the choice is unreasonable, unhealthy, or extreme, it's okay to say yes, even if it's unorthodox. I hope that was helpful, not know-it-all, just my field.
On a birthday note choosing what we wanted to eat for every meal was one of the special treats my Mum started as a birthday tradition, was *very* cool. Happy happy happy birthday to Quinn!
