Okay, it's time...
I surrender. It's just too hard to get this to work. Apparently, I need to find and/or create an "OEM driver disk" for my external USB 2.0 drive enclosure. I'm guessing that BIOS emulation is good enough to expose it to the installer, but not for the OS. So, since I'm determined to install an OS that works, and I have CD-R's to burn...let's hear it, kids:
Poll #934476 What to install?

Which distro should I install on my PS3?

Fedora
1(11.1%)
Gentoo
3(33.3%)
Yellow Dog
1(11.1%)
Other
4(44.4%)

Oh, hell, right. Of your choices, I think I'd have to go with Yellow Dog; they have the most experience making stuff work on funky hardware.

Ubuntu is easy, and stable, enough to use that my friend's sixtyish-year-old parents use it, and it's their first computer. His father has only called my friend once for tech support.
